Cleburne is the Johnson County seat, a town of just under 39,000 by the city’s own count, sitting about 30 miles south of Fort Worth on U.S. 67. It grew up as a crossroads, first on the Chisholm Trail and then around the Santa Fe machine shops that opened here in 1898. That crossroads position is still the practical advantage. You are close enough to the metro for anything you need and far enough out that the good camping starts before the traffic does.
Cleburne State Park sits southwest of town off Park Road 21, built around 116 acre spring fed Cedar Lake. Sites come with water and electricity and some add sewer, so a new floor plan gets its shakedown trip close to home. There are roughly 13 miles of hiking and biking trails and a three tiered CCC spillway along the Spillway Trail.
The city keeps 565 acres of public space and runs more than 350 community events a year, with major improvements coming to Lakeshore Park and the Lake Pat Cleburne area. For a family easing into weekend RV trips, that is a lot of water and open ground inside the city limits.
Less than an hour southwest, Lake Whitney State Park opens onto 23,500 acres of water with full hookup sites, screened shelters and lake view camping. Anglers go after largemouth, striped and white bass and blue catfish, and bald eagles turn up in the cooler months.
