It covers 113,114 acres with 33 miles of hiking trail and 313 miles of waterway, and it is close enough that Village Creek State Park sits on its edge 10 miles north of town.
Ten Miles To The First Campsite
Village Creek State Park is 10 miles north of Beaumont with campsites for tents and RVs, eight miles of foot and bike trail and a canoe launch on the Village Creek Paddling Trail. The Gulf Is A Short Tow
Sea Rim State Park holds 4,000 acres of marsh and shoreline with 15 campsites on utilities, a boat ramp and paddling trails from under two miles to nearly ten. April through July is the busy stretch, so reserve ahead. McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge adds 58,861 acres and costs nothing to walk.
A Town Built On One Morning
The Lucas gusher came in at Spindletop in 1901 at 1,139 feet and ran an estimated 100,000 barrels a day for nine days before it was capped. Texaco, Gulf and Humble were all founded here inside the first year. Gladys City Boom Town and the Texas Energy Museum keep the story, and the South Texas State Fair and Neches River Festival keep the calendar.
