The DORBA trail network crisscrosses 1,200 acres for hikers and bikers and closes when it is wet, so check before you load up. Big Cedar Wilderness adds up to 22 miles of mountain bike trail through cedar and hardwood, and the Balcones Trail runs three miles of concrete with a Joe Pool overlook, linking more than 3,000 acres of open space.
A Century Old Farm Inside The Park
Penn Farm Agricultural Heritage Center sits on 25 acres inside Cedar Hill State Park, where the Penn family worked the land for over a hundred years. It is open daily for a self guided walk and the park will arrange a guided tour if you call ahead. It is a good hour when the campground is your base and nobody wants another trail.
The High Ground In Dallas County
Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center opened in 2011 and protects better than 200 acres of forest on the White Rock Escarpment near the highest point in Dallas County. Cedar Ridge Preserve adds 600 more acres on the old Dallas Nature Center grounds. Between the two, the birding here is better than anything else this close to a freeway.
