Big Spring is the seat of Howard County, out on the High Plains at the eastern tip of the Permian Basin about 80 miles west of Abilene, where Interstate 20 crosses U.S. 87. The town sits in a rocky gorge between two foothills of the Caprock escarpment and has run between 25,000 and 31,000 people since 1960. For an RV shopper that means wide open road, real elevation and wind you plan around.
A Three Mile Loop At 2,810 Feet
Big Spring State Park covers 382 acres on top of a bluff 200 feet above the plains, at 2,810 feet of elevation, with a paved three mile loop road that climbs Scenic Mountain and comes back down. Entry is free and the gate is open eight to sunset. It is a day use park, so plan the night somewhere else.
The Spring The Town Is Named For
The big spring in Sulphur Draw watered coyotes, wolves, buffalo, antelope and mustangs long before the town existed, and in 1849 Captain Randolph Marcy marked it as a campsite on the Overland Trail to California. Moss Creek Reservoir is the local water now. The Civilian Conservation Corps built the state park in 1934 and 1935.

Dust storms and high winds are ordinary here in early spring and summer, and the growing season runs 217 days. On a tall sided fifth wheel that is the difference between an easy run to Abilene and a white knuckle one, which is worth saying out loud before you pick between a fifth wheel and a motorhome.

Oil came in locally in 1926 and there were 810 producing wells by 1936, and the town has been a banking and distribution center for the basin ever since. Nothing out here is close, which is why the Big Spring Cowboy Reunion and Rodeo and the county fair still pull the calendar together, and why the rig you buy needs to be comfortable for four hours at a stretch.
