Every Acre Around The Water Is Public
All of the land around Benbrook Lake is Corps owned public property, which is why the shoreline never turned into a wall of private docks. The dam sits on the Clear Fork of the Trinity about 15 river miles above where it meets the West Fork in downtown Fort Worth and controls 429 square miles of drainage.
A Mile And A Half On Top Of The Dam
The top of the dam runs a mile and a half and has been a jogging and cycling route for years. The lake also has hiking and horseback trails, though some are closed at any given time, so check the Corps page the morning you go rather than the week before.
A Railroad Town That Kept Its Name
The settlement started around 1857 as Miranda and was renamed for James M. Benbrook, who helped talk the Texas and Pacific Railway into building through town. The railway came in 1876 and the post office opened in 1880. The lake did the rest a lifetime later.
